Women’s Basketball Defeats Michigan Tech

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team came from behind to defeat Michigan Tech 69-60 from the Berry Events Center on Saturday (Feb. 2). This is the first time NMU has won over Tech in Marquette since Feb. 16, 2004.

Northern is now 11-8 and 8-7 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The Huskies fall to second place in the GLIAC with a 13-6 overall and 11-4 conference record.

The Huskies led the game from the eight-minute mark of the first half until 7:20 remaining in the game when sophomore guard Alyssa Colla went into the lane to tie the game at 47. On NMU’s next possession, freshman guard Anna Liewen’s jumper gave NMU the 49-47 lead, its first lead of the half.

MTU’s Jillian Ritchie sank two free throws with 6:08 remaining to tie the game for the final time. From there, the Wildcats led the remainder of the game, going up by as many as nine. Colla clinched the victory going 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the last 50 seconds of play.

Colla finished with a game-high 20 points on a 12-for-12 from the charity stripe and 5-for-12 from the floor. Liewen (10), freshman forward Nea Makela (12) and sophomore guard Lauren Gruber (14) also scored in double figures for NMU. Sophomore forward Abbey DeBruin led with 12 rebounds while Gruber and Liewen each added eight.

NMU shot 45.5 percent (20-for-44) from the floor and were 79.4 percent (27-for-34) from the free throw line.

For the Huskies, Kylie Moxley led with 16 points, while Sam Hoyt and Paige Albi added 11 apiece. Ritchie, Moxley and Albi each had four rebounds.

MTU shot 21-for-60 for 35 percent and were 15-for-22 from the charity stripe.

Northern also won the men’s game, 59-55. The last time the men and women both defeated MTU in Marquette was in 1997.

NMU will return home next weekend against Grand Valley State (Feb. 7) and Ferris State (Feb. 9).
