Women’s Basketball Travels for GLIAC Games

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team will travel this weekend for two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games. The weekend will begin with a trek across the Upper Peninsula to Lake Superior State on Thursday (Jan. 24) followed by a game in Midland, Mich. against Northwood on Saturday (Jan. 26). Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Northern stands at a 9-7 overall record and 6-6 in the GLIAC after a split at home over the weekend. On Thursday (Jan. 17), the Wildcats defeated Saginaw Valley State, 67-57. Sophomore guard Alyssa Colla scored a season-high 20 points in the game on two three-pointers, four field and went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

In Saturday’s (Jan. 19) game against Wayne State, though NMU came within one point three different times in the final two minutes, the Warriors held on for the 63-59 advantage.

Sophomore guard Lauren Gruber leads the way for the ‘Cats averaging 12.6 points per game, while Colla has 11.4. Gruber is ranked fourth in the GLIAC for three-point percentage at 43.1 percent. Freshman forward Nea Makela averages 5.7 rebounds per game to lead NMU.

LSSU sits at the bottom of the North Division at 5-11 overall and 4-8 in conference play after being swept over the weekend at home. Grand Valley State took the 69-56 advantage on Thursday night and Ferris State edged the Lakers 74-71 on Saturday.

Maria Blazejewski averages 17 points a game for the Lakers, with Raven Trammell and Kandace Crittendon each scoring10.3. Blazejewski also leads in the rebounding column with a 6.8 average.

Northern leads the all-time series against LSSU with a 47-35 record. The two teams met twice during the 2011-12 season. NMU won 55-36 in Sault Ste. Marie, while the Lakers came to Marquette later in the season for a 74-69 victory over Northern.

Northwood is in fifth place in the GLIAC North Division, just one spot above NMU, with a 7-5 conference record. The Timberwolves were victorious over Ferris (70-46) and GVSU (74-65) on the weekend, after previously being on a two game losing streak.

Three players average in the double digits for Northwood, led by Rachel Church with 12.6, followed by Lauren Robak (10.6) and Gabrielle Rivette (10.0). Kaitlin Susan averages 6.1 rebounds per game, while Jordyn Nurenberg has 5.4.

The ‘Cats lead 38-13 over Northwood in all meetings after a split last season. Northwood took the first meeting last year, 63-55, and NMU took the second, 71-62. Each team’s win was on its own home floor.
