Wildcats Shutout on Friday

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team was shutout 3-0 at Lake Superior State University on Friday (Dec. 14) night from Taffy Abel Arena. With the loss, the Wildcats are now 6-9-3 overall and 2-8-3-1 Central Collegiate Hockey Association. LSSU is 9-10 and 6-7 in conference action.

The Lakers scored a goal in the first period and two in the second. Kellan Lain scored a power-play tally from Stephen Perfetto and Kevin Czuczman 5:09 into the game. Perfetto added another power-play goal 7:26 into the second from Buddy Robinson and Lain. Robinson scored the third goal from Nick McParland and Chris Ciotta six minutes later.

Junior goaltender Jared Coreau stopped 18 shots in the first two periods, including 13 in the first period. Freshman Michael Doan had 15 saves in over 26 minutes in relief of Coreau.

It was the third time this season the ‘Cats were shutout and the first game in the season total goal battle for the Cappo Cup.

The game was delayed over 20 minutes after a piece of glass shattered on a hit by sophomore forward Reed Seckel in the first period.

NMU took five minor penalties and the Lakers were 2-for-3 on the power play. LSSU had seven minors and the ‘Cats were 0-for-5 on the man advantage.

Kevin Kapalka had 29 saves for the home team and LSSU outshot the ‘Cats 36-29.

The two teams meet for the final game of 2012 on Saturday (Dec. 15) night. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. with all the action on 100.3 FM “The Point.”
