Hockey Earns Series Split With Win on Saturday
OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 17-ranked Northern Michigan University hockey team earned a non-conference weekend split with Nebraska Omaha on Saturday (Oct. 20), defeating the Mavericks 2-1 from CenturyLink Center. The Wildcats are now 3-1 on the season.
Junior goaltender Jared Coreau stopped 35 Maverick shots on the evening to earn his 20th career victory. He had 14 saves in the second period and 16 in the third.
Sophomore forward Ryan Daugherty opened the game’s scoring at 17:52 of the first period. Junior forward Stephan Vigier assisted on Daugherty’s second of the season and fifth of his career.
Freshman forward Ryan Aynsley added to the lead, scoring his first goal in the Green and Gold at 4:19 in the second. Assisting on the goal were sophomore forward Reed Seckel and senior forward Matt Thurber.
UNO (2-2) cut the lead to one at 5:20 in the second period on a goal by Zahn Raubeneimer. Bryce Aneloski assisted on the lone Maverick goal.
NMU was 0-for-6 on the man advantage after eight minor penalties by UNO. The Mavs were 0-for-4 on the power play as the ‘Cats took six penalties.
The Mavericks outshot NMU 36-23. Goaltender Anthony Stolarz had 21 saves for UNO.
Northern hosts Notre Dame next weekend from the Berry Events Center for its first Central Collegiate Hockey Association series.
