Golfers Finished 12th at GLIAC Championship

ELYRIA, Ohio – The Northern Michigan University golf team wrapped up the fall portion of its 2012-13 schedule at the 2012 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship hosted by Ashland at the Elyria Country Club on Tuesday. The Wildcats finished 12th in the three-day tournament with a team score 950.

Grand Valley State is the GLIAC Champions, coming from 11 shots back in the final day to post a team score of 880.

Freshman Patrick Sweeney led NMU each day, tallying a 234 for a tie in 47th place. He shot a 79, 73 and 82 in the three rounds. Sophomore Ayrton Mantha was a shot back with a total of 235 and tied for 50th after scoring 75, 81 and 79.

Junior Jared Reid (T61st) was third for the ‘Cats, scoring a 241. Junior Ben Johnson (246) and freshman Austin LeGault (247) also golfed for Northern.

GVSU’s Joel Siegel was the individual medalist, finished with eight-under par 208. He shot seven-under on the final day.

Ferris State, Tiffin, Wayne State, Saginaw Valley State, Ohio Dominican, Ashland, Northwood, Findlay, Lake Superior State and Lake Erie finished ahead of NMU.

Play starts back up during the first weekend of April for the second NCAA Regional in Kentucky.
