Golfers Finished 21st at Regional
KANSASVILLE, Wis. – The Northern Michigan University golf team finished tied for 21st at the first NCAA Regional at the Brighton Dale Golf Course on Oct. 1.
Wayne State University won the event with a team score of 576. Tiffin University (590), Grand Valley State University (592), the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (593) and Maryville University (596) also finished in the top five.
The Wildcats opened the two-day event on Sunday with a team score of 311. Junior Jared Reid, junior Ben Johnson and freshman Patrick Sweeney all carded a 77 on the Blue Course. Monday, the team shot 327 on the White Course to round out the tournament. Johnson led the team with a 78 on the second day and had a team-best combined score of 155.
Reid finished with a score of 157. Sophomore Ayrton Mantha was third on the team with a 165. Sweeney was four shots back with a 161. Freshman Austin LeGault (170) also golfed for Northern.
Wayne State's Rob Favoro secured top individual honors with a 142, edging Tiffin's Luke Schlicher in a playoff.
The Wildcats conclude the fall portion of the season with the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship on Oct. 13-16 in Elyria, Ohio.
