Men’s Hoops Host LSSU and Northwood
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team hosts its final two home games this weekend from the Berry Events Center. The weekend tips off on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. as the Wildcats take on Lake Superior State University. On Saturday at 1 p.m. Northwood University comes to town on Senior Day.
Senior forwards Joe Simon and TJ Cameron will play in their final game in the Green and Gold at home on Saturday and will be honored before the game.
Northern enters the week at 5-18 overall and 4-15 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play after losing two games on the road over the weekend. The Wildcats were defeated 57-51 to Saginaw Valley State University on Thursday and fell 66-46 to Wayne State University on Saturday.
Junior forward Matthew Craggs leads the way for the Wildcats, averaging 13.5 points in 22 games. Sophomore forward Kendall Jackson leads in rebounds with a 6.3 average, and Craggs pulls down 5.7 rebounds a game. Cameron continues to be second in the GLIAC with a 47.4 three-point shooting percentage.
LSSU is 12-11 overall and 9-10 in the GLIAC coming off a pair of losses below the bridge last weekend. The Lakers lost 82-57 to Grand Valley State University on Thursday and 63-54 to Ferris State University on Saturday.
Northern holds a 61-21 advantage in all meetings against the Lakers. LSSU has won the last nine straight games against NMU, including a 74-44 victory in Sault Ste. Marie earlier this year (Jan. 24).
Four Lakers average in the double figures per game, leading is Derek Billing with 15.8 followed by Derek Kinney (14.6), Alex Williams (11.2) and Cameron Metz (10.0). Kinney leads the rebound category with an 8.0 average.
Northwood is 11-12 overall and 10-9 in conference play. The Timberwolves also faced GVSU and FSU over the weekend, splitting the two games. NU started last weekend with an 87-71 loss to the Bulldogs, but were able to get past GVSU, 60-52 on the Timberwolves home court.
Wes Wilcox leads NU with a 13.7 point average per game. Will Bowles (12.4) and Andrew VanDierenDonck (11.3) also average in the double digits. Bowles contributes on the rebounding side of the ball with an 8.2 average and Wilcox adds 6.0.
The Wildcats also lead the series against Northwood with a 42-13 record despite an 81-48 loss to the Timberwolves on Jan. 26.
Following Saturday’s game, there will be an overtime period at Hudson’s Classic Grill beginning at 5 p.m. with d’oeuvres provided and a cash bar. The public is welcome to join the men’s and women’s players and coaches to celebrate the season.
