Men’s Basketball on the Road

MARQUETTE, Mich. – After hosting two games over the weekend, the Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team will hit the road for a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games. The Wildcats travel across the Upper Peninsula on Thursday to take on Lake Superior State, followed by a trip downstate to Northwood on Saturday. Tipoff in Sault Ste. Marie is 5:30 p.m. on Thursday with a 1 p.m. tip on Saturday in Midland.

Northern (4-12, 3-9 GLIAC) enters the week after being swept by Saginaw Valley State (56-51) and Wayne State (65-59). In Thursday’s game against SVSU, junior forward Matthew Craggs scored over 20 points for the third time this season with a game-high 21 points.

On Saturday, four players scored in double figures against the Warriors. Senior forward TJ Cameron and sophomore forward Kendall Jackson each had 15 points, freshman guard Stephan Pelkofer added 14, while Craggs tallied 11. With the losses, NMU has lost by six points or less in three out of its last four games.

The Lakers are currently 9-6 on the season and 7-5 in conference play after splitting their weekend at home. LSSU was defeated by Grand Valley State, 71-62, on Thursday but bounced back with a 69-58 win over Ferris State on Saturday (Jan. 19).

Derek Billing leads LSSU with an average of 17.3 points per game. Derek Kinney (13.7) and Alex Williams (10.9) also average in the double figures while Kinney also averages 7.9 rebounds.

NMU leads the all-time series 63-31. A season ago, the two teams split its meetings. The ‘Cats walked away with the victory (63-55) in Sault Ste. Marie, while the Lakers took the game (68-64) in Marquette later in the season.

Northwood sits just above the ‘Cats in the North Division with a 6-10 overall record and a 5-7 mark in the GLIAC. The Timberwolves defeated FSU on Thursday, 76-66, and concluded the weekend with a 59-49 defeat to GVSU.

Northwood has three players who average double figures, leading the way is Will Bowles with 13.1, followed by Wes Wilcox (12.3) and Andrew VanDierenDonck (12.1).

Northern also leads the series against the Timberwolves, 42-14. Northwood defeated NMU in both of its meetings last season. The ‘Cats fell 64-58 in Midland and 81-53 at home.
