MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team will tipoff the regular season at home on Saturday (Nov. 17) against non-conference Finlandia University at 1 p.m. from the Berry Events Center.
The Wildcats open the regular season after falling in both of its exhibition games against Division I opponents. Michigan defeated the ‘Cats 83-47 on Thursday, Nov. 1 and Detroit Mercy defeated NMU 88-53 on Nov. 9.
Against the Wolverines, freshman center Matt Iverson led the ‘Cats with 14 points while junior forward Matt Craggs added 13. Senior forward TJ Cameron led the team against the Titans with 20 points and eight rebounds while freshman guard Stephen Pelkofer finished with nine points on 3-for-3 shooting from behind the arc. Junior center Scooter Johnson added eight points and eight rebounds.
Finlandia enters the game after coming off of a 117-53 loss to Michigan Tech in an exhibition game on Nov. 7. Ben Coleman led the offense with 13 points, shooting 6-for-10 from the floor. Coleman and Luke Paul each contributed with five rebounds.
Northern lead the all-time series against Finlandia, 37-3. The last time the two schools met was a season ago in Marquette, when NMU defeated the Lions 88-64. Craggs had a double-double with 17 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Sophomore guard Haki Stampley led the ‘Cats with 19 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
