Men’s Basketball Plays Final Exhibition
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team travels to the University of Detroit Mercy for its final exhibition game before beginning the regular season next week. The Wildcats and Titans tipoff at 7 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 9) from Calihan Hall. The game is the Titans home and regular season opener.
Northern enters the matchup after a defeat to the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan (83-47) in an exhibition contest on Nov. 1. NMU was led by freshman center Matt Iverson with 14 points in his first game in the Green and Gold. Junior forward Matt Craggs also scored in double figures with 13 points. The Wildcats finished the game with 22 points in the paint, and 27 off of the bench. NMU shot 19-for-59 for 32 percent from the floor and 6-for-20 from behind the arc.
Detroit plays in the Division I Horizon League. The Titans won their two exhibition games and are coming off the Horizon League Tournament Championship and an NCAA appearance last season.
Detroit defeated Ryerson 87-55 on Oct. 27 and Tiffin 123-71 on Nov. 3. Five players were in double figures against Ryerson led by Nick Minnerath and Jason Calliste with 16 points. Doug Anderson and Ray McCallum each had 14 and Anton Wilson added 12. Six players reached double figures against the Dragons, led by Minnerath (24) and Calliste (21).
It will be the sixth meeting between the two schools. The last was during the 1985-89 season when the Titans defeated the ‘Cats, 68-48 in Detroit, Mich. Detroit leads the series, 3-2.
