Wildcats Finish Third at GLIAC Championship

CANTON, Ohio – The Northern Michigan University swimming and diving team finished third at the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship and head coach Heidi Voigt was named the “Dewey Newsome” Coach of the Year. The Wildcats totaled 512 points and trailed only Wayne State (861.5) and Indianapolis (554.5) after the 42 events.

“It was a lot of fun tonight,” Voigt said. “We swam so well and it felt great to beat Grand Valley. We were a second off of two school records.”

Senior Gaby Alzaga was second in the 200 backstroke in 2:02.41, an NCAA B cut time. In the 200 breaststroke, sophomore Madisen Sechena placed third in 2:18.92 (B).

Sophomore Molly Kearney scored 447.85 points in the three-meter dive and placed second.

“Molly Kearney was the highlight of the night with her third place finish,” Voigt added. “Taylor Grimm also stepped up big time scoring very important points and Madisen Sechena was an all-star all weekend.”

The 400 freestyle relay team wrapped up the championship with a fourth place finish in 3:29.88 (B). Members of the squad were freshman Crystal Bennet, sophomore Emily Bourguignon, sophomore Tara Dowling and sophomore Debbi Lawrence.

Sophomore Jordan Iverson was fifth in the 1650 freestyle in 17:36.27 (B). Freshman Caitlyin Brendan (7th) and Lawrence (9th) also scored for the ‘Cats in the 200 breaststroke and both had B cut times. Sophomore Aspen McHugh finished 12th in the same event.

Bourguignon (7th) and sophomore Taylor Grimm (10th) also scored in the 200 backstroke. Bennet placed 9th in the 100 freestyle. Dowling was 10th in 1650 and Grimm placed 11th in the 200 butterfly.

“I would like to thank all the parents for coming down and supporting us all weekend,” said Voigt. “They traveled far to cheer us on and it was great having Wildcat fans in the pool.”

Athletes who qualify for the NCAA Championship will travel to Cleveland, Ohio on March 5-9.
