Swimming and Diving Defeats Hillsdale
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University swimming and diving team defeated Hillsdale College from the PEIF pool on both Friday and Saturday (Oct. 12-13). Friday was a relay meet with the Wildcats winning all nine events and defeated the Chargers 190-168. Saturday was a traditional dual meet with the ‘Cats again defeating the Chargers (170-101).
“We did great this weekend,” NMU coach Heidi Voigt said. “We are swimming very well early in the season.”
On Friday evening, the ‘Cats took first in the 3x50 butterfly relay with a time of 1:23.24. The Chargers finished second in 1:24.87. The NMU relay team in the 3x50 backstroke won by .20 of a second with a time of 1:25.38. NMU dominated the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:54.19, nearly thirty seconds ahead of Hillsdale.
Sophomore diver Molly Kearney placed first in both the 1-meter (223.35) and the 3-meter dives (234.40).
On Saturday, NMU placed first in 12 of the 15 events. Sophomore Emily Bourguignon placed first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.99. NMU took the top three spots in the 100-yard breaststroke with senior Olga Budiansky finishing first with a time of 1:09.70, freshman Caitlyn Brenden (1:10.21) and sophomore Aspen McHugh were in the second and third spots. Sophomore Jordan Iverson took the top spot in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:59.98, sophomore Tara Dowling (11:05.82) and sophomore Dakota Sechena (11:20.58) finished second and third.
Sophomore Emily Brennan placed first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.92) and sophomore Madisen Sechena finished first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:14.57). Sophomore Deborah Lawrence took the 200-yard backstroke while Iverson was first in the 500 freestyle.
The ‘Cats will travel to St. Cloud, Minn. next weekend to take on St. Cloud State and Minnesota State-Moorhead.
