ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team played its second game at the Wildwood Lodge Tip-Off Classic on Saturday afternoon against MSU-Moorhead. NMU lost a 66-55 decision. It was the first loss on the season for the ‘Cats as they are now 1-1. Moorhead improves to 2-0.
The ‘Cats were only down by one at the half (28-27). After the first 20 minutes of play NMU shot 42.3 percent from the floor (11-26). Shots from the floor included one three-pointer in six attempts (16.7 percent). From the free throw line the ‘Cats were 4-9 (44.4 percent).
Moorhead went on a 14-4 run to begin the second half and held a double-digit lead the majority of the half. Allison Carroll made a lay-up with about seven minutes left in the game to cut the deficit to seven points (53-46). That was as close as the ‘Cats would get for the remainder of the game.
Carroll led NMU with 13 points. Cassie Hegbloom added 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
For the game the ‘Cats were 24-56 from the floor (42.9 percent). From three-point land the ‘Cats were 3-12 (25 percent). NMU only made two trips to the free throw line in the second half and missed both throws. For the game the ‘Cats were 4-11 from the line (36.4 percent). NMU did win the battle along the boards with a 39-36 edge.
NMU will play at the UM-Duluth Tournament next week. The ‘Cats will face St. Cloud on Friday (Nov. 24) and the host school on Saturday (Nov. 25).
