HILLSDALE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team traveled to Hillsdale today to take on the Chargers. After the waves cleared the home team survived with a 137-92 decision.
The Wildcats placed second in the first event of the meet which was the 400-yard medley relay. Sarah Dobratz, Megan Gerou, Sarah Van Oss and Jojo Pollack swam a 4:26.99. In the next event, the 1000 freestyle NMU placed three swimmers in the top five. Sarah Cempel was second (19:24.90) as she was followed by Courtney Lowry in third (19:48.10) and Lindsey Kuehn fifth (19:55.33).
Mimi Marschall with a time of 2:00.79 placed second in the 200 freestyle. Teammate Katie Stamerjohn was fourth in the event (2:06.37). Emily Olson scored four points as she was second in the 50 freestyle (26.55). Other NMU swimmers scoring points in the race included Brenda Zickus in fourth place (27.28) and Kathleen Sweeney in fifth (27.47).
Dobratz (4:57.68) and Van Oss (5:08.07) were fourth and fifth respectively in the 400 I.M. Liz Wretschko placed second on both boards. She had 149.93 points on the 1-meter and 129.30 on the 3-meter.
Emily Olson with a clocking of 1:04.71 placed third in the 100 butterfly while teammate Pollack (1:06.29) was fourth. Marschall was second in the 100 freestyle as she turned in a time of 56.68. Zickus in the event was fourth (58.98) and Laura Shoup fifth (1:03.37).
Dobratz led a second through fourth place finish for NMU in the 100 backstroke. Dobratz had a time of 1:05.35, Meghan Merkey swam a 1:06.91 and Sweeney turned in a 1:07.67.
Marschall had the lone individual win on the day when she captured the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:31.18. Cempel (5:34.24) was third and Stamerjohn (5:44.58) fourth in the event. Van Oss (1:12.67) placed third in the 100 breaststroke as she was followed by Pollack (1:15.12) in fourth and Gerou (1:15.82) fifth.
The relay of Olson, Sweeney, Zickus and Stamerjohn swam a 1:45.79 which captured the 200 freestyle relay.
NMU will swim next at the Ashland Invitational on Dec. 1-2.
