MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team picked up three points over the weekend with the win over the visiting Alaska Nanooks on Saturday night. NMU used two power-play goals in the 3-2 win on Saturday. Friday night the two teams skated to a 2-2 draw.
The Wildcats improve to 6-4-2 overall on the season and 3-2-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). Alaska falls to 5-2-3 and 3-1-2 respectively.
Nick Sirota and Matt Maunu teamed up to give the ‘Cats a 2-0 lead. Sirota scored his fourth goal of the season just 24 seconds into the game. Darin Olver and Pat Bateman assisted. Maunu made the score 2-0 when he scored a power-play goal for his first marker of the season at 8:20 of the second period. "It has been something we have been working on all week the power play," Maunu said. Mike Santorelli and TJ Miller assisted. Santorelli kept his streak in place as he currently has a five-game point streak and has at least one point in 10 of the 12 games.
The Nanooks cut the ‘Cats lead to 2-1 when Tyler Eckford scored at 4:05 of the third period. Andrew Sarauer made the score 3-1 when he knocked home his first goal of the season which was on the power play. "I had a nice tap in goal for the first one," Sarauer said. Blake Cosgrove and Santorelli assisted.
UA tried to make the game close (3-2) with a power-play goal by Justin Binab at 16:56 of the final frame.
For the first time this season NMU had more shots than one of its opponent for a game with 25 for a season high. The Nanooks had 14. "We were very aggressive tonight in our forecheck and I thought the guys did a good job with that," Walt Kyle said. "That always forces turnovers."
Bill Zaniboni was between the pipes for the ‘Cats tonight and had 12 saves. Chad Johnson for Alaska backstopped 22 shots. NMU had scored one power-play goal in the past five games entering the game on Saturday. The ‘Cats were 2-4 with the extra man. The Nanooks were 1-7 on the power play.
NMU will host Minnesota-Duluth in a mid-week encounter on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 7:35 p.m.
