MARQUETTE, Mich. – Entering the weekend the Northern Michigan University volleyball team was on the bubble to make the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball (GLIAC) Tournament. With NMU’s wins over Northwood yesterday and Saginaw Valley State today the Wildcats are in the tournament. The ‘Cats will play at Hillsdale on Tuesday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m.
NMU defeated the Cardinals in three straight at the Vandament Arena on Sunday afternoon (30-22, 30-21, 30-25). NMU has now won three of its past five matches. On the season the ‘Cats are 16-10 overall and 8-10 in the GLIAC. SV ends the 2006 campaign with an overall record of 14-13 and a 6-12 in the conference.
NMU had four players with double-digit kills and digs for the match. Mandie Meyer and Cassie Osiecki both had 13 digs while Breanne Zaremba and Megan Elliott had 10 each. For the match the ‘Cats had 60 digs to 49 for the Cardinals.
Meyer and Barbara Homann had 14 and 12 kills respectively. Samantha Schulte added 11 kills while Elliott had 10. As a team NMU had a hitting percentage of .275 on 59 kills in 142 total attempts. Brittany McGowan had her part in the kills with her 47 assists.
NMU’s play at the net resulted in two block solos and four block assists. Elliott and Homann each had a block solo.
