MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team opened up the 2006-07 campaign with a double-dual against MSU-Moorhead and St. Cloud State on Friday night in the PEIF Pool. Moorhead defeated NMU 136-107 while SCSU down the Aqua-‘Cats 165-71. SCSU defeated MSUM 169-73.
The Wildcat relay of Sarah Dobratz, Megan Gerou, Courtney Lowry and Brenda Zickus placed eighth in the 400-yard medley relay. Freshman Sarah Cempel for NMU, swimming in her first collegiate meet, placed second in the 1650 freestyle. She turned in a time of 18:51.02. Lindsey Kuehn in the same event placed seventh (20:22.75). Katie Stamerjohn was fifth in the 200 freestyle (2:07.18) while teammate Rebecca Fisk was eighth (2:10.01).
Emily Olson was the top placing Aqua-‘Cat in the 50 freestyle as she had a clocking of 26.66 which was good for eighth as Zickus was 10th (27.07). Three NMU swimmers were in the top four in the next event the 400 I.M. Mimi Marschall led the way with a second-place showing (4:51.31), she was followed by Sarah Van Oss in third (4:54.70) and Dobratz in fourth (4:58.62). In the 1-meter diving event Carolyn Oja was sixth (147.95) and Liz Wretschko eighth (125.95).
Lowry with a time of 2:25.60 in the 200 butterfly placed fourth in the event while Rebecca Fisk swam to an 11th place showing (2:45.70). Marschall had her second runner-up finish on the night in the 100 freestyle. She swam the four lengths of the pool in a time of 56.83. NMU had two other swimmers in the top 10 in the event as Olson was ninth (59.01) and Zickus 10th (59.04).
Dobratz picked up the first win on the night for the home team with a time of 2:14.78 in the 200 backstroke. Kathleen Sweeney was seventh in the event (2:27.44) and Lindsay Vanderbroeck 10th (2:34.95). The ‘Cats had three swimmers in the top 10 in the 500 freestyle. Cempel swam a 5:35.17 which was good for third place. She was followed by teammates, Stamerjohn in fifth (5:43.08) and Kuehn ninth (6:01.50).
The second diving event of the meet, the 3-meter, saw NMU place fifth (Wretschko with 141.05) and sixth (Oja with 140.85). Vann Oss then picked up NMU’s second win of the evening with a 2:35.03 in the 200 breaststroke. Jojo Pollack was third (2:43.26), Megan Gerou fifth (2:45.61) and Lowry eighth (2:51.17) in the event.
The final swim of the evening was the 400 freestyle relay. The NMU relay of Marschall, Olson, Stamerjohn and Vann Oss placed second (3:49.12).
The three teams will get together on Saturday (Oct. 21) for the second day of swimming.
