OMAHA, Neb. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team won its second game in a row with a 2-1 triumph over the UMass Lowell River Hawks in the first game of the Mutual of Omaha Stampede Tournament on Friday. NMU will play the winner of the Nebraska-Omaha/Niagara game on Saturday night (Oct. 21).
With the win the Wildcats improve to 2-2-1 on the season while UML falls to 0-2-1.
UML jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Jason Bergeron scored a power-play goal at 7:53 of the first period. Matt Siddall tied the game about 10 minutes later with his second goal of the season at 17:48. Spencer Dillon assisted for his first point of the season. Mike Santorelli scored the game-winner on the power play at 10:31 of the second frame (2-1). Siddall and Darin Olver assisted.
Bill Zaniboni backstopped the ‘Cats with 21 saves on the night. The River Hawks had the edge on shots at 22-18. UML was 1-7 on the power play while NMU was 1-4.
