The Northern Michigan University crew captured Sunday’s (Sept. 17) inaugural Marquette General Iron Oars Regatta on Teal Lake in Negaunee. That win, combined with second place at Saturday’s Copperhead Regatta in Houghton, gave the Wildcats the new Heavy Metal Series traveling trophy.
On Sunday, NMU’s novice women’s eights finished first and second. The contingent from Western Michigan was third.
The varsity men’s fours avenged its Saturday loss to Michigan Tech with a nail-biting victory Sunday at 11:31. Second through fourth places were separated by six seconds.
The next race, the varsity women’s fours, found the ‘Cats on top of Michigan Tech A squad and WMU. Northern won both highlight varsity eights events, followed by WMU and MTU. Northern’s men’s varsity eight had a time of 10:29 while MTU was clocked at 11:02 and WMU at 12:18
