CALIFORNIA, Pa. – Five second-half goals propelled the Northern Michigan University soccer team to a 6-0 non-conference victory over California University of Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats defeated Davis and Elkins on Saturday afternoon by a score of 3-1. At the present time stats were not available from the Saturday match. NMU improves to 8-1-0 on the season while Cal drops to 3-5-0.
Ashley DeKeyser scored the first goal of the game at 23:07 on an assist from Brittney Buchanan. Renee LeBlanc added two goals to give the ‘Cats a 3-0 lead. Her first goal of the contest came at 47:51 on an assist from Joanna Kiilunen. Less than a minute later (48:48) she knocked home her second goal from Buchanan.
After having an assist on two of the first three goals, Buchanan, made the score 4-0 when she found the back of the net at 61:30. Kiilunen picked up her second assist on the day. Michaela Harris then scored the fifth and six goals of the game. She made it 5-0 at 68:20 on an assist from Buchanan. Harris scored less than 40 seconds later (68:59), unassisted, for the final margin.
Kara Music and Dana Bush combined for the shutout. Music tallied four saves while Bush did not record a save. NMU had 21 shots to seven for the home team. Corner kicks were in favor of NMU at six to zero.
The ‘Cats will come home to Marquette for a couple of days before jumping back on the bus later in the week. NMU will travel to Ferris State (Sept. 22) and Grand Valley State (Sept. 24) to get back into Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.
