SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University volleyball team salvaged its three-match road swing with a victory over the Lake Superior State Lakers on Sunday afternoon. NMU had dropped the first two matches on the trip to Northwood and Saginaw Valley State. The Wildcats won in three straight over the Lakers (30-24, 30-21, 30-14) to now stand at 12-2 overall on the season and 4-2 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The Lakers fall to 4-10 and 1-4 respectively.
Three Wildcats registered 10 or more kills for the match. Sam Schulte led the way with 15 kills as she was followed by Megan Elliott with 12 and Kate Olechny with 11. As a team the ‘Cats had a hitting percentage of .291 on 56 kills in 141 total attempts. Brishia Stroven led LSSU with 11 kills.
Rachel Martinez led the ‘Cats with 28 assists as teammate Brittany McGowan added 16. Kate Olechny had a match-high 20 digs. Martinez and Cassie Osiecki each added 12 digs. NMU did not record one block solo, but had 16 block assists. Becky Jarosch led the way with six block assists.
The ‘Cats return home for two matches this week. Friday (Sept. 22) NMU will face Grand Valley State at 7 p.m. and then host Ferris State on Saturday (Sept. 23) at 4 p.m.
