UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Entering today’s match at Saginaw Valley State the Northern Michigan University volleyball team was 44-1 all-time against the Cardinals. For the second match in a row the ‘Cats were defeated in three straight (28-30, 20-30, 30-32).
The win for the Cardinals was the first over the ‘Cats since 1989. NMU drops to 11-2 overall on the season and 3-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). SVSU improves to 10-3 and 3-2 respectively.
Kate Olechny led the ‘Cats with 14 kills for the match as teammate Sam Schulte added 12. For the match NMU had 43 team kills in 155 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .077. Brittany McGowan had 23 assists to pace the ‘Cats. Megan Elliott added two service aces and 10 digs. Cassie Osiecki had 14 digs to lead the ‘Cats in the loss.
At the net NMU had one solo block, thanks to Olechny, and six block assists. Breanne Zaremba and Caitlin O’Hara had two block assists each.
The ‘Cats currently 0-2 on the three-match swing play at Lake Superior State tomorrow afternoon (Sept. 17) for the final match on the trip.
