Hockey Names Assistant Captains

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Walt Kyle, the head hockey coach at Northern Michigan University, has announced that Darin Olver, a senior forward, and Zach Tarkir, a senior defenseman, have been named assistant captains for the 2006-07 season. Pat Bateman was previously named captain. “We had a number of people in mind,” Kyle said. “We wanted to select quality leaders.”
 
Olver has led the Wildcats the past three seasons in points. During the 2005-06 season he was 20-15-35, for his career he is 37-75-112 after 117 games. Olver, was a second-round draft pick (36th overall) during the 2004 NHL Entry Draft of the New York Rangers. He is the highest draft pick in NMU history.   
 
Tarkir has appeared in 110 games along the blueline for the ‘Cats and has seven goals, 21 assists for 28 points. He is a draft pick of the New Jersey Devils. 
 
“We wanted to take our time to select the right guys,” Kyle said. “We feel these guys will take the team in the right direction.”
