MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University volleyball team (2-0) opened the 2006 season by taking its first two matches at the NMU & TCF Bank Tournament on Friday. The Wildcats defeated St. Cloud in the first match of the day 3-1 (30-16, 22-30, 30-23, 30-12) and downed Abilene Christian in the evening’s match also in four (16-30, 30-18, 30-23, 30-14).
Newcomer Mandie Meyer led the ‘Cats against SCSU with 17 kills in her NMU debut. Sam Schulte added 12 kills in the win. Brittany McGowan dished the ball 44 times for match-high honors. Meyer added 12 digs on the defensive front while Breanna Zaremba had 10.
Schulte had 16 kills to lead the ‘Cats against Abilene Christian, while Meyer added 11 and Kate Olechny added 10. McGowan again led the way with 37 assists. Meyer had a team-high 12 digs.
NMU will face UW-Parkside at Noon tomorrow (Aug. 26) and Emporia State at 6 p.m. for second day of action at the NMU & TCF Bank Tournament.
