MARQUETTE-Mich. – United States Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman wrestler Spenser Mango (St. Louis, Mo.) has been named as TheMat.com’s Wrestler of the Month for June 2006.
Mango won gold at 55 kilograms at the World University Championships June 16 in Ulan Bator, Mongolia. He became the first American wrestler to sweep the competition in the Greco-Roman style since 1998.
Mango won three matches on the way to his world title. He opened the tournament with a 4-2 victory over Dan Finh Hue of Vietnam. In the semifinals, Mango stopped K. Hasegawa of Japan, 1-1, 5-7, 6-0. In the gold-medal match, he defeated B. Yasein of Iran, 5-4, 2-1.
Earlier this year, Mango was second at the U.S. National Championships, and first at the FILA Junior National Championships and the University National Championships.
“It’s great that he’s been able to accomplish so much in such a short time. It’s only taken two years for Spenser to earn these great titles,” said USOEC head Greco-Roman coach Ivan Ivanov. “He’s also one of the best students on the team.”
Mango is a sophomore at Northern Michigan University. He is entering his third year as a member of the USOEC Greco-Roman program.
