'Cats Close Against Huskies


 

HOUGHTON, Mich. â€Â“ The last time the Northern MichiganUniversity menâ€Â™s basketball team visited the SDC Gym was last March for a GLIACTournament game and the home team prevailed 87-66, which was the Huskies ninthwin in a row over the â€Â˜Cats.  Tonight was the conference opener for both teamsat Tech and once again the â€Â˜Cats went down 55-54. 

 

NMU came out and took control early and built a nine pointlead in the first half.  But the Huskies came back to take a seven point leadat the half 31-24.  The second half the â€Â˜Cats dominated all but a few minutesand had the game tied with a little over four minutes left in the game.  With alittle over a minute left in the game, David Noel made a layup to cut the leadto two points at 52-50.  Noel made one of his two free throws with 17 secondsleft in the game to give the â€Â˜Cats one last chance at 53-51, but Jason Marcottemade two free throws for the 55-51 lead.  Ricky Volcy hit a three-pointer justinside the half court line for the final count at the buzzer.

 

NMU is now 1-3 overall on the season and 0-1 in the GLIAC. MTU is 4-1 and 1-0 in the conference.

 

R. Volcy led all scorers on the night with 20 points.  Healso had five rebounds.  Randy Alexandre came off the bench to chip in with 13points and eight rebounds.  Noel ended the night with 11 points, six rebounds,two assists and three steals.

 

As a team the â€Â˜Cats were 19-53 from the floor (35.8percent), 4-19 in three-pointers (21.1 percent) and 12-14 from the free throw line(85.7 percent).  Rebounds were dead even at 31 for each side.  The â€Â˜Cats didhave 10 on the offensive end.

 

The â€Â˜Cats next game is at Minnesota-Duluth on Saturday (Dec.4).
