Men's Basketball Drops Season Opener


 

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. â€Â“ The Northern Michigan University menâ€Â™s basketball team (0-1) dropped their season opener to theChristian Brothers (2-0) on Friday night at the John L. Griffin/Lions ClubClassic at Northern Kentucky University.  The â€Â˜Cats held a six point lead atthe half (34-28), but could not hold it and lost 66-65.

 

The â€Â˜Cats shot 55.2 percent from the floor for the firsthalf (16-29) as the Volcy Brothers (Marco and Ricky) both had 11 points eachafter the first 20 minutes of play.  R. Volcy led all scorers on the night with23 points.  M. Volcy only scored four points in the second half and ended the gamewith 15 markers and a game-high 10 rebounds.

 

David Noel made a lay-up with 2:09 left in the game to givethe â€Â˜Cats the lead at 63-62.  CBU took the lead again at 64-63 with less thantwo minutes left in the game.  M. Volcy made a basket with 43 ticks left on theclock to give NMU the lead once again at 65-64.  CBUâ€Â™s Dustin Hoover was fouledby R. Volcy with one second left in the game and he sank both free throws forthe final margin and the win.

 

For the game the â€Â˜Cats were 27-56 from the floor (48.2percent), 4-19 from the three-point line (21.1 percent) and 7-14 from the freethrow line (50 percent).  Rebounds on the night were even as both teams had 35boards.

 

NMU will play NKU on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 7:45 p.m.
