GLIAC Preseason Poll Released

BAY CITY, Mich. â€Â“ The Northern Michigan University football team was picked 11th in the 2006 Great LakesIntercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Preseason Football Coaches Poll.  Thepoll was released in conjunction with the leagueâ€Â™s football media day luncheonheld at the Bay Valley Resort in Bay City, Mich.

 

The Wildcats coming off a 2-8 campaign in 2005 tallied 34points in this yearâ€Â™s poll.  Defending NCAA II National Champion Grand ValleyState University picked up 11 of the 13 first-place votes and 143 overall tonab the top spot in the poll.

 

Saginaw Valley State was second in the poll with 131 points. Ashland with two first-place votes and 119 overall was selected third. Northwood was fourth (117) followed by Michigan Tech (83).  Ferris State and Indianapolis tied for sixth in the poll with 81 points each.  The â€Â˜Cats willopen the 2006 season against the Greyhounds of UIndy at 7 p.m. on Sept. 2  inthe Superior Dome. 

 

The bottom half of the poll has Hillsdale in eighth (65),followed by Wayne State (59) and Findlay (49).  The â€Â˜Cats are followed byGannon in 12th (29) and Mercyhurst in 13th (23).

 

The leagueâ€Â™s 13 head coaches participated in the balloting,but were not allowed to vote for their team.  The first-place team on each ballotreceived 12 points, while second received 11 points, etc.
