ERIE, Pa. â€Â“ The Northern Michigan University menâ€Â™s basketball team saw its five-game winning streak snapped on Thursday night ina low-scoring affair at Mercyhurst College.  The Wildcats scored a season-low45 points as the home team scored three more points (48) for the win.  Theâ€Â˜Cats are now 12-9 overall on the season and 8-4 in the Great LakesIntercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).  The Lakers improve to 16-5 and6-5 respectively. 


Both teams shot about the same percentage from the floor inthe first half.  NMU was 7-23 for 30.4 percent while the Lakers were 8-26 for30.8 percent.  The â€Â˜Cats were down by one at the half (22-21) even though theysank three three-pointers as the Lakers did not make one.  Ricky Volcy made thefirst three baskets of the game, all on lay-ups, to give the â€Â˜Cats a 6-0 lead. After the Lakers tied the game, at six, the â€Â˜Cats went on a 10-6 run (16-12)which was capped off by a Nick Buck three-pointer with about five minutes leftin the half.  The Lakers tied the game up twice before the end of the half firstat 18-all with 1:49 left.  NMU responded with a three-pointer by WillWashington. Ã‚  Then with 37 seconds left in the half the Lakers sank two freethrows to tie the game at 21 before taking the one-point lead at the half.


MC took the early second half lead before R. Volcy made ajumper with 15:37 showing on the clock to give the â€Â˜Cats a lead at 27-26.  Thescore was tied at 29 as the â€Â˜Cats went on a 10-3 run over the next four minutesto once again have the lead at 39-32 when David Noel made a lay-up with 9:05left in the game.  NMU kept the lead until 1:13 left in the game when theLakers made both free throws to tie it once again at 45.  Marco Volcy missed alay-up with 47 seconds left in the game.  The ball went out of bounds and wasgiven to the Lakers.  MC set up for the final shot as Terry Smith drained athree-pointer with 19 seconds left in the game (48-45).  NMU had one last playas R. Volcy missed a three-pointer with four seconds left in the game as Buckgrabbed the offensive rebound but could not convert.


The â€Â˜Cats improved their shooting a bit in the second halfto end the game with 33.3 percent (15-45).  The Lakers were only slightlybetter at 36 percent (18-50).  NMU only made one more three-pointer in the secondhalf and ended the game at 4-17 from beyond the line for 23.5 percent. From thefree throw line the â€Â˜Cats were 11-19 for 57.9 percent.  The battle of theboards was won by NMU with a 37-33 edge.  Turnovers were costly for the â€Â˜Catsas they committed 16 on the night.


R. Volcy led the way for the â€Â˜Cats with 14 points, ninerebounds, three blocks and three steals.  Buck added 10 rebounds forgame-honors.  Noel had nine points and six rebounds.  Andy Kubinski and AviFogel both had 10 markers for the Lakers.


NMU will travel to the other side of Erie, Pa. to take on Gannon University on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 4).
