MARQUETTE, Mich. â€Â“ The Northern Michigan University menâ€Â™s basketball team has had its struggles the past couple of games.  Buta good way to get back on the right track is to go out of conference.  That isexactly what the Wildcats did on Monday night at the Berry Events Center.  The â€Â˜Cats were a little quicker than the Bulldogs of Minnesota-Duluth and wonthe game by an 80-68 score.  NMU moves to .500 on the season with an 8-8overall record.  UM-D falls to 10-9 for the 2005-06 season.


Jake Suardini canned a three-pointer with 15:12 showing onthe clock in the first half and the â€Â˜Cats were up 19-7. Ã‚  The Bulldogs cut thelead to four points with 8:19 left in the half. Ã‚  Will Washington had a dunk,which was followed by a made free throw by David Noel, a basket by Ricky Volcyand all of sudden the â€Â˜Cats were up by nine points at 35-26 with about fiveminutes left.  UM-D shot 53.6 percent from the floor (15-28) for the firsthalf, but was down on the scoreboard 42-36.  NMU was 16-33 for 48.5 percentfrom the floor.


It took the â€Â˜Cats about three minutes into the second halfto build a double-digit lead.  R. Volcy made a lay-up to give the â€Â˜Cats theedge at 51-40.  The Bulldogs did get the lead down to a single-digit at 62-53with about 11:00 left in the game.  NMU then went on an 11-0 run to make thelead 20 points (73-53) when Marco Volcy went to the glass for a lay-up at8:15.  UM-D would not get any closer than 12 points the rest of the way. 


R. Volcy led all scorers with 29 points.  He also had sevenrebounds and eight assists.  Brother, Marco, had a double-double for the thirdtime this season with 13 points and 13 rebounds.  Washington ended the nightwith 14 points and three assists.  John Emerson led the Bulldogs with 20points.


NMU made half of its shots from the floor for the game(30-60), which included 10-23 from the three-point line (43.5 percent).  Fromthe free throw line the â€Â˜Cats were 10-14 for 71.4 percent.  NMU had 11offensive rebounds out of the 36 for the game.  UM-D had 29 rebounds for thegame.


The â€Â˜Cats will play back-to-back games this weekend. Saturday (Jan 21) NMU will face Wayne State at 1:30 p.m. before facingHillsdale on Sunday (Jan. 22) at 4 p.m.
