Ricky Volcy's Double-double Leads The Way

 

HOUGHTON, Mich. â€Â“ Go back in the record books to finda score like the Northern Michigan University menâ€Â™s basketball team put upagainst the Michigan Tech University Huskies on Monday night.  During the1985-86 season the Wildcats defeated the Huskies, 116-73.  The second day of2006 saw NMU defeat MTU in Houghton by a count of 70-45.  With the win theâ€Â˜Cats are now 6-5 overall and 3-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate AthleticConference (GLIAC).  The Huskies are 3-8 and 2-3 respectively.

 

MTU scored the first four points of the game and held thelead at 6-4, but the rest of the way it was all â€Â˜Cats.  When Jake Suardiniconnected from three-point land NMU took a 7-6 lead and never looked back.  Forthe rest of the half NMU went on a 27-13 run to end with a 34-19 lead. NMU forthe first half shot 46.4 percent from the floor (13-28) and held MTU to 29.6percent (8-27).

 

In the second 20 minutes of play the â€Â˜Cats held adouble-digit lead the whole way.  NMUâ€Â™s biggest lead was 29 points at 7:05 leftin the game when Steve Kaiser hit a jumper. Ã‚  The â€Â˜Cats also had the same leadwhen Keder Hyppolite made both of his free throws with 3:51 remaining in thegame.

 

For the game the â€Â˜Cats were 27-62 from the floor for 43.5percent which included 7-23 in three-pointers (30.4 percent).  NMU made nine ofits 14 free throw attempts (64.3 percent).  The â€Â˜Cat defense held the Huskiesto 29.5 percent shooting from the floor (18-61) as MTU only made onethree-point basket in 13 attempts (almost eight percent).  MTUâ€Â™s onlythree-point basket came in the first half.  NMU did have the advantage on theboards with a 43-40 slate. Ã‚ Ã‚ 

 

Ricky Volcy led the way with a double-double of 16 pointsand 12 rebounds.  Will Washington added 12 points, Kaiser off the bench had 13and Marco Volcy added 10.  Radayl Richardson led MTU with 15 points and fiverebounds.

 

NMU will face Grand Valley State University on Saturday(Jan. 7) at the Berry Events Center after facing the Lakers of Lake SuperiorState University on Thursday (Jan. 5).
