HOUGHTON, Mich. â€Â“ Over the weekend the Northern Michigan University womenâ€Â™s cross country ski team competed at the HoughtonHoliday Inn Express Christmas Classic.  Saturday (Dec. 17) the women competedin the 5K freestyle race and on Sunday it was the classic. 


Tami Kochen captured the freestyle event on Saturday with atime of 16:16.1.  The fourth through the sixth spots belonged to the â€Â˜Cats asMorgan Smyth led the way with a 16:46.5, former â€Â˜Cat Caitlin Compton was next(17:21.0) and Jennifer Wygant had a 17:21.0.  Laura DeWitt was ninth in theevent (18:01.6).


Sunday in the senior classic race, Kochen was third(34:55.9), Compton fifth (37:10.6) and Wygant seventh (37:46.9).  Smyth won theolder junior division of the classic with a time of 35:16.5 while teammateDeWitt was fourth (37:55.1).


The team will be at the U.S. Cross Country Championships inearly January at Soldier Hollow, Utah.
