Doug Sams Contract Not Renewed As Head Football Coach


 

MARQUETTE, Mich. â€Â” The contract between Northern Michigan University and Wildcat football coach Doug Sams, which expires June 30, will not be renewed,NMU Athletic Director Ken Godfrey announced today (Nov. 8).

During hisfour years at Northern, Sams posted a 13-29 record, including this yearâ€Â™s 2-8mark. 

â€ÂœIâ€Â™d justlike to say thank you for the opportunity to coach at Northern Michigan University,â€Â said Sams. 

Sams owns a16-year collegiate career coaching mark of 71-81.  He came to NMU from FairmontState College in West Virginia where he had an 11-year record of 53-47 and wontwo West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic (WVIAC) championships. He alsocoached one year at Urbana (Ohio) University where he was 5-5.

â€ÂœI appreciatethe effort Doug and his staff have made,â€Â said Godfrey.  â€ÂœThis decision was nottaken lightly.  It was a tough decision, but one I felt needed to be made.â€Â

The contractsfor the four full-time assistants â€Â“ Matt Collins, Jovan DeWitt, Keith Jordanand Bob Jurasin â€Â“ also expire June 30.  Godfrey said the four will have theopportunity to apply for assistant positions under the new coach, but untilhired in that situation, they will have no assigned tasks with Northern otherthan their teaching duties.

A nationalsearch to replace Sams will begin immediately.
