SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. â€Â“ Two second periodpower-play goals were all the Northern Michigan University hockey team neededon Saturday in the Soo against the Lake Superior State University Lakers.  NMUhad four power-play opportunities on the night.


With the win the â€Â˜Cats are out of the gate with a 5-1-0overall record and a 2-0-0 mark in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association(CCHA).  The Lakers on the other hand are now 1-2-3 and 0-2-2 respectively.


Andrew Contois scored his second goal of the season at 1:57of the middle frame to give the â€Â˜Cats the 1-0 lead.  Mike Santorelli and DirkSouthern assisted on the goal.  The â€Â˜Cats second power-play goal of the periodcame at 19:32 by Pat Bateman.  The goal, to make it 2-0, was his second of theseason as Jamie Milam and Darin Olver assisted.  The Lakers added a goal at14:29 of the third period for the final margin.


Bill Zaniboni pitched a shutout for the majority of the gameas he had 24 saves on the night.  Jeff Jakaitis from LSSU had 20 saves.  Againthe NMU penalty kill unit did not allow the Lakers a power-play goal in nineopportunities.  The shots were almost even as the Lakers had 25 to 22 for theâ€Â˜Cats.


Next week the â€Â˜Cats will have to leave the U.P. for thefirst time this season and travel to East Lansing to face the Michigan StateSpartans (Nov. 4-5).
