Record Crowd Sees 'Cats Down Huskies


 

MARQUETTE, Mich. â€Â“ When Northern Michigan andMichigan Tech clash in anything it is always entertaining and exciting.  Fridaynight at the Berry Events Center a new record crowd of 4,260 saw NMU defeat theHuskies by a score of 5-1. Ã‚ ÃƒÃ‚‚  The â€Â˜Cats are now 2-1-0 on the season while MTUfalls to 1-4-0.

 

The â€Â˜Cats had a 5-0 lead before the Huskies got on theboard.  Patrick Murphy opened the scoring with his second goal of the season at2:17 of the first period.  Jamie Milam and Bobby Selden assisted.  MikeSantorelli made the score 2-0 with his second goal of the season at 17:50. Dirk Southern picked up his fourth assist on the season and Andrew Contois hisfirst. 

 

Murphy scored his third goal of the season and second of thenight, on the power play, at the 18:00 of the second period. Dusty Collins andAndrew Sarauer assisted.  â€ÂœWe have been ready to go every night,â€Â Murphy said. Ã¢Ã‚€Ã‚ÂœWe came out here knowing it was going to be a battle.â€ÂÃƒÃ‚‚  Dirk Southern in thethird period made the score 4-0 with his first goal of the season at 2:02. Contois and Nathan Oystrick assisted.  Oystrick followed up his assist with hisfirst goal of the 2005-06 campaign, on the power play, at 9:42 to give theâ€Â˜Cats the 5-0 lead.  Darin Olver and Milam assisted. Ã‚  The Huskies got on theboard with a short-handed goal at 15:26 of the third frame.

 

MTU was called for 15 penalties and 41 penalty minutes whichgave the â€Â˜Cats 12 power-play opportunities.  NMU was called for nine penaltiesand 18 penalty minutes as MTU had six power-play opportunities. 

 

Bill Zaniboni went a little over 55 minutes before giving upa goal.  Over two games he has gone about 115 minutes without giving up agoal.  Tonight he had 20 saves.  â€ÂœI was just trying to keep the puck out of ournet,â€Â Zaniboni said.  â€ÂœI did not want to give them any momentum anytime in thegame.  We played so solid defensively again tonight.â€ÂÃƒÃ‚‚  NMU registered 30 shotsfor the evening while MTU had 21.

 

The two teams will square off for round two tomorrow nightin Houghton.
