MARQUETTE, Mich. â€Â“ The Northern Michigan University hockey team opened its exhibition schedule on Friday night at the Berry Events Center against the United States National Team Development Program U-18 team(USNTDP U-18).  The â€Â˜Cats scored two goals in the first period and two more inthe third period for the 4-3 win.


Dirk Southern gave the home team the early lead with a goal31 seconds into the game.  Pat Bateman and Nathan Sigmund assisted.  The USNTDPU-18 squad tied the game with a goal by Patrick Kane at 8:01 of the firstperiod.  Zach Tarkir gave the â€Â˜Cats the 2-1 lead with a power-play goal at13:59 of the period.  Mike Santorelli and Sigmund assisted.  The USNTDP U-18team tied it at two-all with a goal by Ryan Flynn at 16:35.


The middle frame did not see a score, but Santorelli gavethe â€Â˜Cats a 3-2 lead with a score at 5:33 of the third period.  Matt Maunu andBlake Cosgrove assisted on the goal.  Southern then gave the home team a two-goallead with an empty-net goal at 19:24.  Bateman assisted.  Blake Geoffrionscored for the USNTDP U-18 team with an extra attacker at 19:41 for the finalscore of the game.  Both Sigmund and Bateman ended the night with two assists. 


Newcomer Derek Janzen was in goal for the â€Â˜Cats as he turnedaway 23 shots on the night.  NMU had nine power-play opportunities on thenight.  The USNTDP U-18 team had eight chances with the extra man.


NMU will play its second exhibition game of the weekend witha contest against York University on Saturday night (Oct. 8) at 7:35 p.m.
