Qi Wang Picks Up First Win As NMU Head Coach

 

DULUTH, Minn. â€Â“ Over the weekend at theMinnesota-Dultuh Tournament the Northern Michigan University volleyball teamwent 1-2.  NMU is now 1-3 on the season. The â€Â˜Cats defeated St. Edwardâ€Â™s ofTexas in their second match of the day on Friday (Aug. 26) to give Qi Wang hisfirst win as the NMU head coach.  NMU won in three straight (24-30, 23-30,25-30).  The â€Â˜Cats lost their first match on Friday to Concordia-St. Paul inthree straight (25-30, 24-30, 20-30) and dropped their only match on Saturday(Aug. 27) to Truman State in four games (24-30, 19-30, 30-25, 26-30).  Wang isthe former head coach at Truman.

 

Against Concordia, NMU was led by Megan Elliot and HollyGreenamyre as they both had 10 kills each for the match.  Rachel Martinez led theâ€Â˜Cats with 23 assists.  Elliot had a team-high 11 digs while Stephanie Crossadded 10.

 

In the win against St. Edwardâ€Â™s three â€Â˜Cats were indouble-digit kills as Nicole Hintze led the way with a match-high 13. Greenamyre added 12 while teammate Caryn VanBeckum had 10.  Brittany McGowandished out a match-leading 33 assists.  Liz Kohn had a match-high 25 digs. 

 

In the final match of the weekend against Truman, Hintze ledthe way with 18 kills.  Sam Schulte added 11 kills while Elliot had 10. McGowan led the way with 31 assists as teammate Martinez added 15 helpers. Four players had 10 or more digs for the match.  Hintze and McGowan both had 15digs each.  Elliot added 14 digs while Kohn added 11.  Greenamyre added threeblock solos and four block assists.

 

Next week the â€Â˜Cats are at the SIUE Cougar Classic.  Theyplay Southern Indiana and SIUE on Friday, Sept. 2.  On Saturday, Sept. 3 theâ€Â˜Cats will face Drury and Missouri Southern.
