'Cats Picked Third In GLIAC Preseason Volleyball Poll

 

BAY CITY, Mich. â€Â“ The head volleyball coaches of theGreat Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) chose Grand ValleyState University as the favorite to capture the leagueâ€Â™s North Division and TheUniversity of Findlay to take the South Division in preseason balloting.

 

Northern Michigan University was selected third in the NorthDivision with 27 points and one first place vote just one point ahead of Ferris State (26 points).  GVSU, the 2004 GLIAC North Division champion, received 31 pointsand three of the six first-place votes it was eligible for.  The Lakers edged Northwood University, which garnered 30 points and three first-place votes. Ã‚ 

 

Michigan Tech University placed fifth in the division with14 points, followed by Lake Superior State University (11) and Saginaw Valley State University (8).

 

Findlay, after tying for second place in last seasonâ€Â™s SouthDivision, received 23 points and three first-place votes in the poll.  Ashland University was second in the poll, two votes behind the Oilers (23-21).  The Eaglespicked up two first-place votes.

 

Hillsdale College with 18 points and one first-place votewas selected for third in the division. Next in line were Wayne State University (12), Gannon University (10) and Mercyhurst College (6).

 

The GLIAC sent six teams to the NCAA II Great Lakes RegionTournament last season (Ashland, Ferris State, Grand Valley State, Hillsdale, Northern Michigan and Northwood).  The Wildcats won the tournament and earneda trip to the NCAA II Elite Eight.

 

Each of the GLIACâ€Â™s 13 coaches voted for the division inwhich they play, but were not allowed to vote for their own team.  Thefirst-place team in the North Division ballot received six points, while thesecond-place team received five points, etc.  The first-place team in the SouthDivision received five points, while the second-place team received fourpoints, etc.
