COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. â€Â“ Northern Michigan University head hockey coach Walt Kyle has been selected as the head coachfor the U.S. National Junior Team that will compete in the 2006 InternationalIce Hockey Federation World Junior Championship, USA Hockey has announced.  Theevent will take place in late December (2005) through early January in British Colu mbia (Vancouver, Kelowna and Kamloops).  This will be Kyleâ€Â™s sixth coachingassignment with USA Hockey and fourth with the U.S. National Junior Team.

 

Kyleâ€Â™s first appearance at the World Junior Championshipcame in 1991, when he served as an assistant coach under Kevin Constantine. The following year, Kyle accepted his first of two consecutive head coachingassignments, leading Team USA to a bronze medal at the 1992 World JuniorChampionship in Fussen and Kaufbeuren, Germany.  In 1993, Kyleâ€Â™s team finishedfourth at the event in Gavle and Fulun, Sweden.

 

â€ÂœItâ€Â™s a great honor anytime you get the opportunity torepresent your country in a game you love,â€Â Kyle said.  â€ÂœThe World JuniorChampionship is a great event with the best players in the world competing, andthe team that goes in the most prepared and focused will ultimately succeed.â€Â

 

He has also worked on the coaching staff at two IIHF Menâ€Â™sWorld Championships.  In 1994, he was an assistant to Ron Wilson as Team USA finished fourth in Milan, Italy.  In 2001 he worked under Lou Vairo as Team USA earned a fourth-place finish at the World Championship in Cologne and Hanover, Germany.

 

Kyle is entering his fourth season at NMU as he is 65-44-13behind the Wildcat bench.  He has taken the â€Â˜Cats to the CCHA Super Six in eachof his three seasons.
