Soccer Inks Recruits

 

MARQUETTE, Mich. â€Â“ Matt Granstrand the headwomenâ€Â™s soccer coach at Northern Michigan University has announced that thefollowing student-athletes have all signed a National Letter of Intent toattend NMU and play soccer for the â€Â˜Cats beginning with the 2005 season.  BrittneyBuchanan, Melissa Borrelli, Michaela Harris, Jamie LeMay, Meghan Sarna andCasey Wilcox will wear the â€Â˜Cats jersey in the fall.

 

Buchanan, a 5-7 sweeper from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, was atwo-time captain of the provincial program team.  She won silver medals at theWestern Canada Games and at the 2000 Canada Summer Games.  Buchanan attendsEvan Hardy Collegiate and plays club soccer for the Hollandia Impact.  â€ÂœBrittis a top level athlete who will play in our midfield position, bringing us aplayer who is capable of attacking out of the middle,â€Â Granstrand said.

 

Borrelli, a 5-10 goalkeeper from Troy, Mich. and Athens High School, was her high schoolâ€Â™s Rookie of the Year.  She plays club soccer forthe Michigan Gators â€Â˜87.  â€ÂœMelissa is a gifted athlete who has the size andagility to play â€Â˜keeper at the highest level,â€Â Granstrand said.

 

Harris, a 5-3 midfielder from Traverse City, Mich. and West Senior High School, was the MVP at the USA Cup.  She was also all-conferenceand all-region in soccer and cross country.  Harris plays club soccer for theNorthstar â€Â˜87.  â€ÂœMichaela is a multi-sport athlete who will bring a high levelof speed and athleticism to our outside midfield position,â€Â Granstrand added.

 

LeMay, a 5-9 forward from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and EvanHardy Collegiate, averaged two goals a game during her senior campaign.  Herhigh school team won the provincial championship in 2003 and 2004.  LeMay was a four-time all-star provincial team selection.  â€ÂœJamie is a goal scorer pure andsimple.  She has terrific speed and the ability to finish the opportunitiesthat are created,â€Â Granstrand said.

 

Sarna, a 5-7 defender from Winnipeg, Manitoba and Sisler High School was a four-time member of the Manitoba Provincial Team.  She was alsoher high schoolâ€Â™s team MVP.  Sarna plays for the Northwest club team.  â€ÂœMeghanis a versatile player who could play any central position for us.  She isdominating in the air and has wonderful skill and athletic ability,â€Â Granstrandsaid.

 

Wilcox, a 5-2 midfielder/forward from Petoskey, Mich. was a first team all-conference, all-region, all-district and an all-state honorablemention selection after her junior season.  She plays club soccer for thePetoskey Breakers.  â€ÂœCasey is a speedster who is also a proven goal scorer andwill add more athleticism to our roster,â€Â Granstrand said.

 

Granstrand is looking forward to mixing the newcomers withhis returning squad.  â€ÂœI am looking forward to the upcoming year and feel thatthis recruiting class, combined with our returning players, should make for anexciting and highly competitive season,â€Â Granstrand added.
