'Cats Have Nine Lives


 

MARQUETTE, Mich. â€Â“ What looked like eliminationstaring the Northern Michigan University hockey team in the face on Saturday nightturned around and gave the â€Â˜Cats another life.  Trailing 2-0 after 40 minutesof play NMU scored three third period goals within the first six-and-a-halfminutes of the period to take the 3-2 lead and the â€Â˜Cats added an empty-netgoal for the 4-2 win on Saturday night. 

 

With the win the â€Â˜Cats tied the series with the WesternMichigan University Broncos at 1-1 with the third and deciding game on Sundaynight (March 13) at 7:35 p.m. at the Berry Event Center.   Ã‚ Tickets for thegame will go on sale at the Berry Events Center Ticket Office at 12:00 p.m.(noon) on Sunday. 

 

The â€Â˜Cats are now 21-10-7 on the season while the Broncosare 14-20-2.  The winner of the game on Sunday will advance to Joe Louis Arenaand the CCHA Super Six next week in Detroit.

 

The Broncos scored two power-play goals to take the earlylead of the game.  Pat Dwyer scored his sixth goal of the season at 14:50 ofthe first period to give the Broncos the 1-0 lead.  WMU added another marker at15:56 of the second period by Paul Szczechura for the 2-0 advantage.

 

Walt Kyle must have said something to the boys during thesecond intermission.  â€ÂœI did not give them any speech,â€Â Kyle said.  â€ÂœWe talkedabout all year about winning games late and winning playoff series late.  Igive all the credit to the leadership in the room.â€Â NMU came out in the thirdperiod like a different team.  A loss would end the â€Â˜Cats season. 

 

Andrew Contois scored his 13th goal of the seasonand team-leading fourth short-handed marker to cut the lead in half to 2-1 at2:08 of the third period.  â€ÂœIt is huge any time you can score a short-handedgoal,â€Â Contois said.  â€ÂœIt swings momentum in your favor.â€ÂÃƒÃ‚‚  Dirk Southernassisted on the goal.  A little over three minutes later, Jamie Milam tied thegame at two-all with his 10th goal of the season at 5:20.  For Milamit was his ninth power-play goal of the season, which leads the team.  NathanOystrick and Darin Olver assisted on the goal. 

 

The â€Â˜Cats third goal in the span came at 6:26 of the period,which turned out to be the game-winner (3-2), by Southern for his 11thof the season. Ã‚  â€ÂœI just got lucky.  It just went in and the place went crazy,â€ÂSouthern said about his game-winning goal.  Contois was given the helper. Kevin Gardner added an empty-net insurance goal at 19:35.  Oystrick picked uphis second assist on the night. 

 

Tuomas Tarkki kept the â€Â˜Cats in the game with his 29 saveson the night.  Daniel Bellissimo for the Broncos had 22 saves for the game. WMU was 2-4 on the power play while the â€Â˜Cats were 1-4.  The Broncos had the edgeon shots with a 31-26 count.
