SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. â€Â“ The Northern Michigan University hockey team concluded the 2004-05 regular season on Saturday night at Lake Superior State University by winning their fifth straight game.  NMU defeated theLakers by a score of 3-2.  The â€Â˜Cats have now won 20 or more games the pastfour seasons in a row as they are now 20-9-7 overall and 17-7-4 in the CCHA. LSSU falls to 9-20-7 and 8-15-6 respectively.


The two teams traded first period goals as Kevin Gardnergave the â€Â˜Cats the early 1-0 lead with his second goal of the season at 5:37 ofthe period.  John Miller and Pat Bateman assisted.  The Lakers tied the gamewith a power-play goal by Trent Campbell at 14:37.


Jamie Milam gave the â€Â˜Cats the lead for good, 2-1,  with apower-play goal of his own at 3:25 of the second period, for his ninth goal ofthe season and eighth on the power play.  Darin Olver had the lone assist onthe goal.  Bateman then scored his 11th goal of the season at 10:00of the period to give the â€Â˜Cats the 3-1 lead.  Gardner and Olver assisted onthe goal.  LSSU made it close with a goal at 12:56 of the period by Campbell.


Tuomas Tarkki had 33 saves on the night.  Matt Violin forLSSU had 25 saves.  The Lakers had 35 shots on goal to 28 for the â€Â˜Cats.  NMUwas 1-3 on the power play while the Lakers were 2-7.


NMU will host the CCHA Playoffs next weekend at the Berry Events Center.  The series is a best-of-three and will get underway on Friday (March11) with game one, game two is Saturday (March 12) and if necessary game threeis Sunday (March 13).
