MARQUETTE, Mich. â€Â“ The Northern Michigan University menâ€Â™s basketball team needed a win on Thursday night against Ferris State University at the Berry Events Center to secure a position in the GLIACTournament.  The â€Â˜Cats are going have to wait until Saturday to find out if theseason is moving on or not as they dropped a 74-65 decision to the Bulldogs. The â€Â˜Cats need to defeat Grand Valley on Saturday or an Ashland loss to advanceto the post-season.  NMU sits at 12-14 overall on the season and 7-10 in theGLIAC.  Ferris improves to 20-5 and 12-5 respectively.


The Bulldogs jumped out of the gate quickly as they held thelead until Nick Buck drained a three-pointer at 9:21 of the first half to givethe home team a 15-14 lead.  Ricky Volcy gave the â€Â˜Cats a six-point lead at24-18 with a little over six minutes left in the half when he converted athree-pointer himself.  Ferris tied the game at 26 with about two minutes left,before R. Volcy hit another three for the lead at 29-26 going intointermission.


NMU controlled almost 50 percent of the second half beforethe Bulldogs took the lead at 47-46 with 10:23 left in the game.  Ferris wenton a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to take their lead to 10 points withthe score 56-46.  The â€Â˜Cats cut the lead down to nine points on two occasions,but their final gasp was when Buck drained a three with 39 ticks left on theclock and the â€Â˜Cats down by eight (71-63).


R. Volcy led all scorers with 31 points.  He also chipped inwith five rebounds.  David Noel was the only other â€Â˜Cat in double-figures with13 points as he also had five rebounds, four assists and four steals on thenight.  Marco Volcy shared game-high honors with eight rebounds.


For the game the â€Â˜Cats were 23-49 from the floor for 46.9percent and 5-12 from the arc (41.7 percent).  NMU was 14-21 from the charitystripe for 66.7 percent.  Rebounds were even at 32 for each side, but Ferrishad one more offensive board at 11-10.


The regular season finale will be on Saturday (Feb. 26) atthe Berry Events Center.
