HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University menâ€Â™s cross country ski team defeated the University of Alaska Fairbanks over theweekend at the CCSA Regional Championships to claim the overall title.  The NMUmen won the classic race with 83 team points just two ahead of the Nanooks.  OnSunday the â€Â˜Cats tallied 86 points to claim the freestyle title, UAF was secondwith 74.  NMU totaled 169 combined points ahead of Fairbanksâ€Â™ 155. Ã‚ 


Bryan Cook won the 10K classic race with a time of 29:16.3. Two UAF skiers were next as Gus Kaeding was fourth (30:04.8) and Bret Bedardwas fifth (30:24.5).  Bill Bowler in ninth place (30:45.1), Adriaan Ostranderin 10th (30:45.1) and Mike New in 14th (31:15.3) rounded out the top15 skiers for the â€Â˜Cats.  Only the top three skiers for each team are eligibleto score team points. 


Cook then came back on Sunday and took the 15K freestylerace with a time of 40:43.9.  He was ahead of teammate Bedard who was second(41:40.1).  Ostraander was the final â€Â˜Cats to score points as he was fourth(41:57.0).  New (42:35.4), Kaeding (42:40.1) and Bowler (42:42.2) were eighth,ninth and 10th respectively. 


The team will compete next at the NCAA Skiing NationalChampionships in Burlington, Vt. from March 7-13.  Cook, Bedard and Kaeding allqualified for nationals.
