Was Not Pretty, But 'Cats Pick Up A Win


 

MARQUETTE, Mich. â€Â“ The Northern Michigan University menâ€Â™s basketball team held on for a 61-59 win over the Northwood UniversityTimberwolves on Thursday night.  NMU held a six-point lead at the half (31-25)to improve to .500 for the season at 11-11 and 6-7 in the GLIAC.  TheTimberwolves fall to 8-12 and 4-9 respectively.

 

NU raced out to a five-point lead at 9-4 with almost sevenminutes gone in the game.  NMU would tie the game at 16-all when David Noelsank a three-pointer with a little less than seven minutes left in the half. Marco Volcy made baskets to give the â€Â˜Cats the seven- point lead at 23-16 andthe eight-point lead at 29-21.  Randy Alexandre made both of his free throwsright before the half to send the team into the locker room with a cushion. NMU and NU shot about the same percentage for the first half.  The â€Â˜Cats were11-28 for 39.3 percent and the Timberwolves were 9-22 for 40.9 percent.

 

NMU for the second half held the lead for almost the entire20 minutes.  With 2:40 left in the game, the Timberwolves tied the score at54-all on a three-pointer.  M. Volcy made one of his two free throws to givethe â€Â˜Cats the 55-54 lead with a little over two minutes left in the game. David Noel made three of four free throws with less than 22 seconds left in thegame to ice the win. 

 

NU actually shot better from the floor for the game than theâ€Â˜Cats.  The Timberwolves were 23-49 for 46.9 percent while the â€Â˜Cats were 21-49for 42.9 percent.  NMU was 8-24 from the three-point line (33.3 percent) and11-22 from the line (50 percent).  NU had a three rebound advantage at 31-28. 

 

M. Volcy led the way with a game-high 19 points.  MattLePage added 18 markers in the win.  Noel hit for double-digits with 10points.  Ricky Volcy was kept below his scoring average with six points, but hehad a game-high seven assists. 

 

The â€Â˜Cats will hit the road next week to take on Saginaw Valley on Thursday, Feb. 17 and Lake Superior on Saturday, Feb. 19.  The â€Â˜Cats willhave their own make-up game on Monday night, Feb. 21 at Wayne State.
