MARQUETTE, Mich. â€Â“ The Athletic Department at Northern Michigan University has announced the Athletes of the Month for December andJanuary.  Decemberâ€Â™s were Ricky Volcy from the menâ€Â™s basketball team andLindsay Williams from the womenâ€Â™s cross country skiing team.  Januaryâ€Â™s wereTuomas Tarkki from the hockey squad and Williams.

 

Volcy for the month of December averaged 19.4 ppg and 7.4rpg.  At Minnesota-Duluth, Volcy led all scorers with 27 points as he was 12-18from the floor. He had a double-double against St. Norbert with 33 points and13 rebounds.  Against Northern Kentucky he had a game-high 26 points, ninerebounds, three assists and three steals. 

 

Williams won three races during December.  She won theclassic race at the Grand View XC Challenge Wolverine Nordic event in Ironwood, Mich.; she then won the Michigan Tech Christmas Classic and the NMU Open.  Atthe U.S. Cross Country Championships in January, Williams was fifth overall inthe classic race, but the third fastest American in the event.  Williams thenwon the classic sprint race winning the event a little more than second overthe second place finisher.  She then won the Capitol Square Sprints in Madison, Wis. as she went undefeated through the three rounds of competition.  To cap offthe month she won the classic race at the NorAm Super Tour which was held at Mt. Itasca in Coleraine, Minn.

 

Tarkki for the month of January was 4-2-1 with a 1.42goal-against average and a .950 save percentage.  During the month he collectedhis third career shutout with the 1-0 win over Miami.  Tarkki was named theCCHA Goaltender of the Week for his play against Bowling Green as he blocked61-of-64 shots against the Falcons for the weekend.  He leads the CCHA ingoaltending for all games and in conference action.
