Bobby Selden Scores First Career Goal In NMU Win


 

MARQUETTE, Mich. â€Â“ For the first 40 minutes ofthe game it looked like a typical game at the Berry Events Center.  The â€Â˜Cats were up 3-1, Tuomas Tarkki was campaigning for more Hobey Baker votes (www.hobeybaker.com) with his saves andgeneral overall play, and NMU was at home.  Tarkki is currently ninth in theHobey Baker voting as of Feb. 4 (11:30 p.m.).

 

But the final 20 minutes of the game saw five goals scoredas NMU had three and the Nanooks from Alaska Fairbanks two.  But when the finalhorn sounded NMU had won their 10th home game of the season 6-3. NMU is now 14-8-5 overall on the season and 12-6-3 in CCHA play.  The Nanooksare 8-12-3 and 7-11-3 respectively. Currently at the Berry Events Center for the 2004-05 season NMU is 10-0-1. 

 

UAF struck first on the night with a goal at 2:29 of thefirst period.  NMU would answer with five goals in a row.  Mike Santorelliscored his team-leading 13th goal of the season at 3:33 of the firstperiod on the power play.  Dirk Southern and Zach Tarkir assisted.  AndrewContois made the score 2-1 with his own power-play goal, for his 10thof the season, at 9:11 of the second period.  â€ÂœIt is always nice to score.  Itwas a little more wide open tonight,â€Â Contois said.  Santorelli and Southernassisted.

 

Bobby Selden made the count 3-1 when he scored his firstcareer goal at 14:13 of the second period to give the â€Â˜Cats the 3-1 lead.  â€ÂœItfeels good I was getting a little worried,â€Â Selden said about scoring his firstcareer goal.  It was Seldenâ€Â™s 53rd game in a NMU uniform.  KevinGardner and John Miller assisted. 

 

Southern gave the â€Â˜Cats a three-goal cushion at 4-1 when heput the puck in the back of the net for his sixth marker of the season at 3:58of the third period.  Contois and Selden assisted.  Contois added his secondgoal of the night and 11th of the season at 4:51 of the finalframe. Ã‚  Santorelli was given the lone assist on the goal.

 

The Nanooks tried to make it a game by scoring twopower-play goals within a little more than two minutes of each other.  UAFscored at 6:39 and 8:58 of the third period to make the score 5-3.  Zach Tarkiradded his second goal of the season at 9:42 of the period for the final scoreof the night.  Darin Olver and Pat Bateman assisted.

 

Contois (2-1-3), Southern (1-2-3) and Santorelli (1-2-3) allended the game with three points each.  Selden (1-1-2) and Tarkir (1-1-2) eachhad two points on the night. Ã‚ ÃƒÃ‚‚ 

 

Tarkki had 37 saves on the night.  â€ÂœI did not think it wasone of his strongest games.  He has been very consistent,â€Â Walt Kyle said.  â€ÂœWedid not play well in front of him and I think that Tuomas would like to have acouple of them back.â€ÂÃƒÃ‚‚ ÃƒÃ‚‚  UAF used two goaltenders as Wylie Rogers started thegame and registered 16 saves while Keith Bartusch had six saves.  Each teamscored two power-play goals.  The â€Â˜Cats had eight opportunities while theNanooks had five.  UAF had 40 shots on goal while NMU had 28 for the game.

 

The teams will square off again tomorrow night (Feb. 5) at7:35 p.m. at the Berry Events Center.
