Dean Ellis Now In NMU Record Book


 

MARQUETTE, Mich. â€Â“ What started with a 116-85win over Northland on Nov. 22, 1986 has made Dean Ellis the all-time winsleader for menâ€Â™s basketball at Northern Michigan University.  Ellis won his 301stgame on the NMU bench with a 66-54 GLIAC win over the Saginaw Valley StateUniversity Cardinals on Saturday afternoon at the Berry Events Center.  Glenn Brown, the man who Ellis replaced, had 300 wins on the NMU bench.  The win wasthe fourth in a row for the â€Â˜Cats as they are now 9-10 overall on the seasonand 4-6 in the GLIAC.  SVSU falls to 9-11 and 4-7 respectively.  Ellis is now301-225 on the NMU bench. 

 

NMU led the entire game as they jumped out to an 11-4 leadfive minutes into the game.  David Noel sank a three-pointer was which followedby a lay-up by each of the Volcy brothers to give the â€Â˜Cats the first sevenpoints of the game.  Jake Suardini sank a floating jumper down the lane whichgave the â€Â˜Cats their biggest lead of the half at 35-24 before the intermission.

 

The second half of the game was all â€Â˜Cats.  NMU built a20-point lead almost seven minutes into the half at 51-31 when Ladi Kabatconverted a lay-up.  The â€Â˜Cats held a double-digit lead the rest of the half onthe strength of 57.1 percent shooting from the floor for the half (12-21). 

 

For the game the â€Â˜Cats were 24-48 from the floor for 50percent, 5-12 from the arc (41.7 percent) and 13-23 from the free throw line(56.5 percent).  The Cardinals had one more offensive rebound than the â€Â˜Cats at12-11, but for the game NMU had the 36-31 advantage on the glass.

 

Ricky Volcy led all scorers with 28 points for the game.  Healso had six rebounds and four assists.  Noel added 12 points, six rebounds,three assist and four steals in the win.  Marco Volcy added 10 points for the game.

 

The â€Â˜Cats will play four of the next five games on theroad.  Up first this week is Grand Valley on Thursday (Feb. 3) before playing Ferris State on Saturday (Feb. 5).
