MARQUETTE, Mich. â€Â“ Dean Ellis won his 300thcareer game on Thursday night at the Berry Events Center when the Northern Michigan University menâ€Â™s basketball squad defeated the Lake Superior StateUniversity Lakers by a 74-64 count.  Ellis (300-225) is now tied with GlennBrown (1968-86) with the all-time wins record for NMU. Ã‚  Brown was 300-188 inhis NMU career on the bench. Ã‚  Also with the win NMU has also won the pastthree games in a row, which have been all GLIAC games to improve to 8-10overall on the season and 3-6 in the conference.  The Lakers are now 6-13 and2-8 respectively.


The first half saw four lead changes and three ties.  LSSUhad the biggest lead of the first half at 21-16 with 8:42 left.  Jake Suardinisank a three-pointer to cut the Lakers lead to 21-19 with 5:46 left in the halfbefore Marco Volcy tipped the ball in to tie the game at 21-all with 3:42 lefton the clock.  Suardini made a big play right before the half went he made alay-up to tie the game at 27-all with a minute and change left in the half. The Lakers hit a three-pointer right before the end of the half for the 30-27lead going into the locker room.


Only down by three points at the half was not that badconsidering that the Lakers shot over 50 percent from the floor (14-27 for 51.9percent) while the â€Â˜Cats were struggling at 32.3 percent (10-31). 


The second half saw the â€Â˜Cats cut into the Lakers lead rightaway when the Volcy brothers combined for five points within the firstminute-and-a-half as Marco made a lay-up which was followed by Rickyâ€Â™sthree-pointer.  It took the Lakers almost four minutes into the second half toscore their first basket.  R. Volcy gave the â€Â˜Cats the lead for good when heconnected for a two-pointer with 5:23 left in the game and NMU up 54-52.  NMUâ€Â™slargest lead of the game was with 12 ticks left on the clock for the game at74-61. 


R. Volcy poured in a team-high 20 points for the night.  M.Volcy had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.  Suardini, off thebench, and David Noel both had 12 markers on the night.  The â€Â˜Cats dished therock for 16 team assists and were like a thief with 11 team steals. 


LSSU did shoot a little bit better than the â€Â˜Cats from thefloor for the game with a 47.2 percent (23-53)

to 45.9 percent mark (28-61).  NMU was 5-24 from thethree-point line (20.8 percent) and 13-16 from the line (81.3 percent).  Theâ€Â˜Cats had 12 offensive boards on the night and limited the Lakers to two offthe offensive glass.  Total rebounds were in the â€Â˜Cats favor at 40-26. 


Ellis will go for the all-time NMU wins record when theâ€Â˜Cats host Saginaw Valley State University on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 29) at3:00 p.m. for â€ÂœPack the Placeâ€Â at the Berry Events Center.
