'Cats Found A Way To Win


 

DETROIT, Mich. â€Â“ Tiffany Grubaugh who playedher first year of collegiate basketball at Wayne State came back to haunt herold school on Saturday afternoon.  She poured in a game-high 16 points to leadthe Northern Michigan University womenâ€Â™s basketball team to a 65-55 win overthe Warriors.  NMU committed 26 turnovers for the game.  With the win the â€Â˜Catsare now 9-4 overall for the season and 2-3 in the GLIAC.  WSU falls to 2-10 and0-5 respectively.

 

The â€Â˜Cats were in control for most of the first half as theytook the lead for good at 10-9 about five minutes in the game.  NMUâ€Â™s biggestlead of the game was 10 points at 36-26 with about a minute left in the half. NMU also led after the first 20 minutes of play at 38-28.  Holly Cole had 12points at the intermission as that is what she ended the game with.  NMU shot48.4 percent from the floor for the first half on 15-31 shooting and held WSUto 33.3 percent from the floor (10-30).

 

WSU tied the game with about 5:28 left in the game at 50-alland then Maria Kasza then hit one of her two free throws to give the â€Â˜Cats thelead once again at 51-50.  The â€Â˜Cats went on a 14-5 run to close out the gameand pick up the win.  NMU shot 12 free throws the final two minutes of the gameand converted 10 of the throws.  Tera Opperman was a perfect four-of-four downthe stretch. Ã‚  She also had four steals and five rebounds for the game. 

 

Emily Belland ended the game with 11 points and fourrebounds.  Allison Carroll added three assists and three steals in the win. Grubaugh added five rebounds, two assists and three steals in the win onSaturday. 

 

The â€Â˜Cats shot 42.6 percent from the floor for the game(20-47) and the squad was 6-18 from the arc (33.3 percent).  From the freethrow line the â€Â˜Cats were 19-28 for 67.9 percent.  On the boards the Warriorscame out on the leading edge of the stick with a 42-40 advantage.

 

NMU will play their next three games at home.  Up first isMercyhurst on Thursday (Jan. 13), then Gannon will be at the Berry Events Center on Saturday (Jan. 15) before Michigan Tech will call on the â€Â˜Cats on Monday(Jan. 18).
